That’s Not What He Said

Yes, it was.

I know you think you don’t hold those beliefs, and you want for him to not have said that. But he did.

He said that because of who he is: who his father was, and the way he learned to abuse power.

He said that because of what greed does to a man: how it warps a worldview, and teaches the art of taking advantage.

He said that because he knows who supports him: those who want these terrible things, and those who will stand by while these terrible things come to pass.

He said that because he can: our republic is crumbling, and the pieces are falling too fast to count.

I don’t have an inspirational message for you. If you have been defending statements like these all along as they escalated towards overt racism, I hope this type of shock will open your eyes. But my hopes are not high. You must have already been able to dismiss other atrocious behavior and statements before he took office.

If this did not shake you, I have some more words you may not want to hear: You are counted among those who want these terrible things. History will not look kindly on you and your ilk.

If you somehow did wake up today, welcome to the war. We are losing. To win, we will have to wake up every day and fight to ensure our names are counted among the resistance to fascism, judged by our actions.
